The Ha1n fought and won a great battle against the Vie65ts by the end of Shen
Nong's era. Their chief proclaimed himself Huang Di, the Yellow Emperor of
the Center. Huang Di inherited the heritage of the Three Yellows era and the
Five Mounts Territory ended.
The Vie65ts fled to the south where their chief proclaimed himself Vie6m
D9e61, the Red Emperor of the South, and named their territory Xi1ch Quy3,
the territory of the Red Devils. The Vie65ts regarded themselves as
descendants of the first three chiefs of China's Three Yellows era.
D9e61 Minh, a third generation descendent of Shen Nong, fled to the southern
territory of the Five Mounts and married Princess Vu5 Tie6n. Their son,
Lo65c Tu5c, became king of the south and called himself Kinh Du7o7ng Vu7o7ng.
He married Long Nu74, a daughter of D9o65ng D9i2nh Qua6n. Their son, Su2ng
La4m, succeeds his father to become La5c Long Qua6n, meaning the La5c Dragon.
King La5c Long Qua6n, the Dragon Lord of the Mighty Seas, married the
beautiful Princess A6u Co7, descendant of the Immortals of the High
Mountains, the daughter of King D9e61 Lai. Their union gave birth to one
hundred sons and the Kingdom of Ba1ch Vie65t, whose principalities extended
from the lower Yangtze River to the north of Central Vie65t Nam. One day the
king, deciding they were incompatible, said to his wife: "I am a dragon, you
are a fairy. We can't remain together." So they decided to separate. Half
the children returned with their mother to the mountains, the others followed
their father to rule the lowlands.
That La5c Long Qua6n's descended from the Dragon Lord and A6u Co7 from the
Immortals, holds significance for the Vietnamese because the Dragon
symbolizes Yang and Immortal symbolizes Yin. Thus the Vietnamese believe
they are the descendants of Tie6n Ro62ng, the Immortal and the Dragon, and
these symbols are their earliest totems.
The Chinese historian recorded that in 2361 BC, the Vie65t Thu7o72ng kingdom
sent a diplomatic delegation to the Ha1n court and offered a "sacred turtle"
as a friendship present. The turtle was a thousand years old and its shell
was covered with inscriptions in hieroglyphics. Emperor Yao transcribed all
these inscriptions into the "Calendar of the Sacred Turtle."
